2006
Year of the XXIII Interamerican Congress of Radiology

The CIR is now a multifaceted organization in which numerous people of various countries are busy developing different educational, technical and corporate programs, as has been stated in the reports and commentaries of the past Assembly in Chicago, some of which you may be able to consult later on this number of NOT i CIR.

The Interamerican Congress of Radiology, which was the reason and the origin of our corporation in 1943, is still the landmark of our corporation.  It is the reason of our social and academic gathering and the main forum to present the scientific production of radiologists in Latin American countries.

The 2006 Congress is important because it is the first one outside the American Continent, taking place in Spain, native country of the radiologists of the SERAM° and also the mother-land of many of us.°

The members of the CIR and SERAM Scientific Committees have worked very hard for over a year and have a great education program for us.  On the other hand, the scientific program has been put together with the many electronic free papers and posters that will show the experience of radiologists from Spain and the American Continent.°

The Congress will also be an excellent occasion to strengthen our friendship.  Registrations and reservations are made on-line at  www.seram.es

We hope to see you in Zaragoza May 26-29, 2006.

The CIR creates the Electronic Education Department and
 adopts the Portal Radiologíavirtual.org

Doctor Miguel E. Stoopen told the General Assembly that following the negotiations between the CIR Board of Directors with ° the presidents° of the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology and the Argentinean Society of Radiology, it was decided° that the CIR° absorb° the financing of the education portal www.radiologiavirtual.org,  which was implemented by the above mentioned societies.

For that reason, he put forward to the Assembly the creation of the Electronic Education  Department  (e-education ), under the Coordination of Dr. Francisco Javier Rodríguez-Recio from Spain, one of the creators of this educational portal, who, with help of doctors Alejandro Beresñak, Oswaldo Ramos, and José Luis Criales-Cortés  will continue to be in charge of the educational content.

In turn, the CIR has made a commitment° to give additional support° providing teachers and° creating a group  a group of local reporters that represent every one of the National Associations that make up the College to contribute ° spreading knowledge about the benefits of the portal.

With these actions that were unanimously approved by the Assembly the College may continue promoting this activity°, which is, undoubtedly, one° of the° most significant in its recent history.

Miguel E. Stoopen, M.D., requested that the National Associations send their proposals to the Secretariat suggested to the attendants that if the Committee determines the approval of some of the modifications, a consultation process be held among the Counselors by e-mail and to summon an Extraordinary Assembly to Change the Bylaws one day prior to the Congress in the city of Zaragoza, a motion that was approved by the Assembly.

Three Cities Nearby Zaragoza

Madrid, Barcelona
and Valencia

Another additional attraction° of the SERAM-CIR Joint Radiology Congress, is the possibility to visit different Spanish cities, resides Zaragoza, due to the special geographical location of our city, which is situated halfway, about 300 kilometers from Madrid and Barcelona.

Madrid, the Capital City, located in the center of the Peninsula, has a diverse setting for tourism and cultural activities (Del Prado Museum and Thyssen Museum, among others), with outstanding purity in representative areas (Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Barrio de Salamanca, etc…)  that combine with modern large avenues and buildings. The most prestigious theater companies and actors play in theaters and halls.

By high speed train (AVE), the distance between Zaragoza and Madrid is covered in a comfortable hour-and-a half trip.°

The surroundings (Aranjuez Gardens, El Escorial, …) are also very interesting, with neighboring cities such as Toledo or Segovia, that must be visited.

Barcelona, the highest expression of Mediterranean culture, is one of the most° attractive metropolis of Europe.  A joyful city full of colors, open to the sea, also offers splendid cultural and tourism options (La Sagrada Familia by Gaudi, the Liceo, Picasso Museum, Tapies Institution, etc..) with a mixture of modern and traditional art (Ramblas, Barrio Gótico, Paseo de Gracia). Barceloneta beach, inside the city, and other beachside localities (Sitges, Casteldefels) offer additional attractions for tourists in the city.

Music and art aficionados will feel delighted because the city is the venue of the most interesting avant-garde trends.

You may reach Condal
City from Zaragoza by highway (two hours and a half) or train.

Valencia is another very interesting Mediterranean city worth visiting, at a reasonable distance, with enjoyable weather. Known by its universal “fallas,” that are burnt in the most important festivities, it has other attractions throughout the year.  It is a modern city with diverse and interesting museums and surroundings, such as the outstanding Albufera, that must be visited. Its gastronomy is excellent, mainly based on rice and paellas.
